Urs Baertschi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Property & Casualty (P&C) Reinsurance at Swiss Re, said the firm still sees adequate opportunities in some short-tail lines around property and specialty in various regions, alongside growth opportunities from data centres.
In a video interview
ahead of the 2026 annual Rendez-Vous de Septembre (RVS) in Monte Carlo, Reinsurance News spoke with Baertschi about the current state of the re/insurance market.
He discussed the lines of business where Swiss Re sees the greatest opportunities and challenges over the next 12 months.
“The picture is fairly consistent with what we’ve been talking about for the last year,” said Baertschi. “The market is, of course, quite competitive, but fundamentally, some of the short tail lines around property, around specialty, still provide adequate opportunities in various parts of the regions.”
He continued, “We find the U.S. liability environment continuously challenging. That has not improved in a dramatic way.”
Baertschi added that the data centre industry also presents an opportunity for Swiss Re to pursue, given that more are coming to market.
“And then the new new thing that everybody’s talking about is the data centres. It’s actually not that new. As an industry, we’ve been supporting the data centre industry and technology industry for a long time. But there’s more coming to the market right now, and that’s an opportunity to lean into,” he said.
